Solving a Healthcare Firm’s Complex Staffing and Revenue Challenges with Better Data

Learn how Synaptiq unified NorthStar’s data to streamline revenue processes, optimize staffing, and drive smarter, data-backed decision-making.
Problem:
As a healthcare staffing firm that provides anesthesiology services to hospitals and medical facilities through CRNAs and anesthesiologists, NorthStar Anesthesia faces challenges with reconciling data to make their revenue processes as expedient and efficient as possible. Due to inconsistencies in data across different sites and regions, reporting as well as reconciling payments, schedules and contracts is time-intensive and error-prone for their administrative staff.
Furthermore, inefficient data processes and tools hinder NorthStar’s ability to systematically address issues in revenue tracking, forecasting, and contract renegotiation, resulting in diminished project margins accounting for millions of dollars annually.
Solution:
With Synaptiq’s help, NorthStar integrated their disparate data sources into a unified cloud lakehouse, powered by Databricks Unity Catalog. Combining data sources such as MS SQL Server tables, semi-structured data from Excel files, workforce management data, and API data, Synaptiq created the foundation for a unified analytics solution opening the door to easily analyze and compare data across the organization.
Databricks Workflows and Delta Live Tables were used to generate high-quality datasets for analytics enabling access to up-to-date operational data in near real time. Layering analytics tools and dashboards in Power BI on top of the unified lakehouse, NorthStar now has a visual and standard format to identify data anomalies and perform root cause analysis on inefficient processes, excessive cost expenditures, and more to improve their business operations.
Outcome:
With multiple data sets integrated into one data platform, NorthStar can now more easily compare the performance across all of their client sites/facilities. Their operations team can now more quickly compare information such as a facility's scheduled vs contracted vs actual data, and see this information across any site, during any given time period.
Furthermore, schedulers can quickly see if they are scheduling the appropriate amount of people for their facility on any given day and quickly make changes to avoid service disruption.
With the data infrastructure in place, NorthStar is well positioned to go further with their data and use it for even more business improvements such as creating a forecasting model so a hospital site would know how many workers they would need to schedule on a given day at each time of the day.
